The MS program in Translational Surface Engineering is unique within the US academia, with the overarching objectives of identifying, inspiring and nurturing the next generation of surface engineers. The curriculum has been developed with the advice of numerous companies, and offers a laboratory course, providing the students with hand-on experience. The program an educational focus of the fundamental and important aspects of the materials’ surface interactions. It focuses on traditional surfaced science - solid surfaces, as well as on surfactant systems of air/water, water/oil, and water/solid interfaces. The program’s goal is to provide the student with the tools to engineer surface and interface properties.
“Translational engineering” is identified as a critical step in translating research into practice, which is motivated by the need to bridge the ever widening gap between exploding scientific advances and their slow adoption by industry. The translational flavor of the program is emphasized throughout the program, in the thesis, as well as in the major project option. In both options the student will gain knowledge about timely, efficient innovative strategies for producing novel groundbreaking technologies and devices.
This MS program provide the student with strong scientific foundation and advanced engineering knowledge, all with an emphasis on engineered interfaces. One can anticipate that graduates of the program will be sought after by industry and academia because of the creative material interaction problem solving abilities students will develop.
The program has two options:
- Thesis option in which the student carries out research which is summarized in a thesis.
- Major project option in which the student takes an aspect of surface engineering, in an area that has been previously researched, and proposes an industrial application using the knowledge acquired in the program.
Admission:
- Minimum GPA 3.5,1 GRE score of 159+ in Math, and 153+ in English
- BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Physical Chemistry, Bioengineering
Prerequisite:
12+ credits of math, two semesters of organic chemistry, two semesters of physical chemistry.
